Origin/Distribution:
Brazil provinces of Formosa, Chaco, and Santa Fe in Argentina, to Mato Grosso in Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay.
Scientific Name: Nandayus nenday
Other Names: NANDAY CONURE, BLACK HEADED CONURE, And BLACK MASKED CONURE.
Age To Sexual Maturity: 2 to 4 years old.
Lifespan: approx. 20 or more years.
Colour mutations: I know of one Cinnamon.
Temperament: Can be very noisy and is generally un-suitable for a residential area. Generally they are very good breeders. Best kept one pair per aviary. Can make excellent companions. Especially if only one is kept. Like most conures they are clowns. They are big sooks and love to cuddle.
Talking: They sound more like "Donald Duck" But do learn to talk heaps.
Length: Approx. 310 - 320 mm (or approx 12.5 - 13 inches)
Housing Requirements:
Nanday Conures will quickly destroy timbers so a steel aviary is recommended. An aviary or suspended cage of about 3 metres long is ideal.
They do best if they are provided with an area of privacy in both the aviary as well as in a suspended cage.
Diet / Feeding: Fruits, vegetables, nuts, proteins, and a quality seed mix.
Nesting: They will breed in either a log or nest box. 400 - 600 mm (or approx. 16 - 24 inches)
Nesting material: Decomposed non-toxic saw dust, wood shavings or other suitable materials.
Breeding: Up to six eggs can be laid.
Incubation approx. 23 - 26 days.
Fledge approx. 8 weeks.
Independent approx. another 2 to 3 weeks.
Many breeders make the nest entry hole smaller than normal diameter and allow the Nandays to chew the timber entry hole to the size they prefer. This can stimulate these birds to breed.
Most Conures have a habit of removing all the nest box material and laying their eggs on the bare wooden base. More nest material will be needed as required so the hard flat nest base does not damage the eggs.
