Mutations: Sun Conures only come in Normal or the pied mutation but there are many Aratinga species.
Native Country: Guyana, Surinam, Brazail, French Guiana.
Native Habitat: Forest, Palm, Savannah.
BASIC FACTS: The sun conure is classified as a medium conure with its size but roughly 10-12 inches from beak to tail (about 30cm). There size is comparison to a Quaker or Cockatiel. There is no way to visually sex a sun conure so there for DNA is the only option. A sun conure can live to be 25-30 years or older. Average weight of 100g-120g
PERSOANLITY/ PET QUAILTY: Given adequate attention the sun conure can make a fantastic pet, and love their owner’s companionship. A very important thing to remember when being a conure owner is that they are not shy at all and like to investigate everything so you need to make sure you have a safe place for your sun to hang out with you were it can not cause itself any harm. For a Sun Conures size they are an extremely loud bird and can be demanding they will scream to get attention so if you live in apartment’s blokes a sun conure might not be the best bird for you, although if you live in a house with plenty of room and time the sun conure would be perfect.
CAGE: The minimum size requirement for a sun would be NO smaller then 20X20X24 the bigger the cage the better it is it MUST be big enough for the bird to flaps its wing and get exercise whilst still in the cage. And don’t forget toys do take up room as well.
Diet: A good Sun Conure diet must include large mixed millets, canary grass seeds, hemp seed, safflower, sunflower, peanut, fruits and veggies. A good Cockatiel seed mix is great. Be careful not to add too much sunflower, as Conures can easily become "sunflower junkies" like most bird’s can. Sunflower seeds are very high in fat content and can make your Conure become overweight if proper exercise is not maintained. Apples and Cucumbers, spinach, chickweed, spray millet, egg food, broccoli, carrot, orange slices and non-poisonous berries can also be offered on a regular basis. Fresh water, cuttlebone and grit should also be supplied at all times.
HEALTH ISSUES:
There have been no major health problems yet to be discovered for the sun conure... Although they are still likely to catch infections as much as any other bird although here are some infections that might occur to your sun conure. Chlamydiosis, Appetite loss, fluffed feathers, nasal discharge. Diarrhea, Fecal portion of stool not formed, multiple causes, from change in diet to internal parasites. Feather Plucking, Bird plucks own feathers; may be due to boredom, poor diet or other illness. Polyoma Virus, Anorexia, lethargy, weight loss, sudden death. IF ANY OF YOUR BIRD IS DISPLAYING THESE SYMPTONS PLEASE TAKE YOUR BIRD TO THE NEAREST AVAIN VET TO SEE MEDICAL ATTENTION!
BREEDING: sun Conures are easily breed in captivity. They would be ready to breed at about 2 years of ago but it is advised to wait maybe 2.5 or older before starting to breed. Once you have a true pair (meaning male and female) and are supplied with a nest box at the size of a cockatiel nest box , I suggest is 12x12x12 or 15x12x12 made out of strong safe wood.
Once the female has laid her clutch usually consisting of four to six eggs you should start to see signs of chicks hatching out after about the period of 23/25 days. It is not unlikely that the first time your suns settle down to breed that they will have a completely infertile clutch, but if by chance they do hatch out some chicks you can pull the chicks at the age 14 days to hand feed do have friendly and well socialized sun Conure’s, or you could leave them with the parents for the parents to raise and handle the chicks daily for 10min a day from the age of two weeks old.

We have two of these lovely, LOUD birds; our male is a rescue who came with the unfortunate name of "Zazu," and is very affectionate to me while hating everyone else. Our female, "Sunny," was bought from Free Flight Aviary in Del Mar, California after my wife fell in love with her at the bird mart we were running. Zazu is about six years old, and Sunny is more than ten; they've shown no signs of interest in one another as mates, but are good cagemates.
Neither talks well, though Sunny makes a noise that sounds like "turkey pot pie" and another which seems to be asking if we went "bye-bye." Zazu just squawks and laughs, but the laughter is real; he only does it at appropriate times.
